Should I hire a lawyer or have a public defender?
Public Defender’s are very dedicated, well trained lawyers who help people who cannot afford to hire a private attorney. If you do not have the money to hire a private attorney you can petition the court to assign a public defender to your case. Depending on your income and expenses the judge may appoint a public defender to represent you.
Private attorney’s generally do not have the heavy caseloads that public defenders have and can provide more individualized service and attention. Often because they have lighter caseloads and work directly for you, a private attorney can spend more time on your case and give you the individualized attention you deserve.
